Berry Patch

Berry Patch

The Berry Patch is a demonstration garden showing some fruits and berries commonly grown in the tri-state. We have 3 types of blueberries, 2 types of raspberries, 1 type of blackberry, 2 types of strawberries, and 2 types of espaliered apples. The purpose of the garden is to demonstrate proper planting, spacing and maintenance of a fruit garden.

The blueberries consist of 3 types, which ensures good pollination.  These are:  Vaccinium corymbosom ‘Chandler,’ Vaccinium corymbosom ‘Ivanhoe,’ and Vaccinium corymbosom ‘Bluecrop.’  ‘Chandler’ is noted for having the largest berry of all — it is a good pollinator, ripens late, and is hardy to –10 degrees.   ‘Ivanhoe’ is a large berry that produces a consistent crop and ripens early.  ‘Bluecrop’ is also a consistent producer that ripens early.

The raspberries include 2 types in a slightly raised bed:  Rubus ‘Latham’ and Rubus ‘Heritage.’ They are in a raised bed to improve the drainage since raspberries do not grow well in wet soil.  ‘Latham’ is a summer red that is a consistent producer of luscious red raspberries on last year’s canes.  ‘Heritage’ is a fall red that produces one crop in the summer and another in the fall and keeps producing until frost. The nice thing about ‘Heritage’ is that you simply cut it down to a height of about 4 ” in the late fall — staking is not required.

The type of blackberry we have is called Rubus ‘Triple Crown.’  It is called ‘Triple Crown’ because of its flavor, productivity, and vigor. The canes get very long and hence are good for trellising. They are hardy canes that produce in late July to early August.

There are 2 types of strawberries:  Fragaria virginiana X Fragaria chiloensis ‘Allstar’ and Fragaria virginiana glauca ‘Tribute.’  ‘Allstar’ is a June bearer that has a nice shape and is good for u-picking or home gardens.  It is resistant to red stele, verticillium wilt, and powdery mildew.  ‘Tribute’ is a day-neutral or everbearing cultivar.  These berries produce early in June, and produce again about every 6 weeks up until frost.

Two types of apples are espaliered around the perimeter of the Berry Patch:  Malus pumila ‘Goldrush’ and Malus pumila ‘Red Delicious.’ ‘Goldrush’ is similar to golden delicious varieties.  Both ‘Red Delicious’ and ‘Goldrush’ varieties are popular eating apples.
